Hay Festival 2016

Owen Hopkins

For 29 years the Hay Festival has brought together writers from around the world to debate and share stories at its festival in the staggering beauty of the Welsh Borders and at the foot of the Black Mountains.

Once again Ty-Mawr Lime is delighted to be supporting the Hay Festival and this year we will be sponsoring Owen Hopkins' talk titled 'Mavericks: Breaking the mould of British Architecture." The history of architecture is a story of continual innovation, and yet at certain points within that story come an architect whose vision completely defies convention. Owen's book of the same title focusses on 12 such figures from the history of British architecture, including Sir John Soane, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Cedric Price and the late Zaha Hadid. Their work is bold, frequently controversial, often radical; it is architecture that actively resists being pigeon-holed into a particular style or period.

Owen Hopkins is a London-based writer, historian and curator of architecture. He studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art and is currently the Architect Programme Curator at the Royal Academy of Arts, whilst also working as an independent scholar and writer.

Owen's talk, Event 388, takes place on Friday 3rd June at 7:00pm in the Oxfam Moot at the Hay Festival and is sponsored by Ty-Mawr Lime Ltd.
