Can I render on top of existing Limewash?

It is difficult to advise on whether it is suitable to render on top of Limewash as it is dependent on a number of factors. These include

• stability of the background (a product is only as good as what it goes on to)
• what material is being proposed to render with
• what the substrate is - if the limewash has been painted onto masonry, it is more likely to be more successful than if painted onto existing lime render

In most cases, we would suggest trialing a ‘dashing coat’ to give a good bond for the new render.
