Sometimes a fresh coat of paint is all that’s needed to add a totally new look to kitchen cupboards, furniture and interior trims. Our Eggshell and Ecopro Eggshell are perfect for painting interior woodwork and wooden furniture, but surfaces like melamine and MDF require a little more preparation.
It’s worth bearing in mind that many kitchen units are now made from composite materials like MDF or particleboard and coated with a laminated wood, plastic or a melamine finish. Likewise a lot of furniture nowadays (especially the flat pack variety!) is made from coated MDF or chipboard. If you’re planning on updating kitchen cupboards, melamine surfaces or particleboard furniture with paint, read on for our top tips on how to achieve a professional, long-lasting finish:
• Melamine and foil-coated particleboard isn’t absorbent like wood or plaster, so it’s important to sand it well to a matt finish in order to provide a key and help the paint stick.
• Don’t forget to wear a suitable mask when sanding and work in a well-ventilated area, or outside if possible!
• Wipe away any excess dust then use a damp cloth to thoroughly clean the surface.
• For best results when painting these types of surfaces, we’d recommend using a primer first. Our Multi Purpose Primer is ideal because it is water-based and provides a sound base for painting over.
• Earthborn Multi Purpose Primer isn’t like a normal paint, so don’t be surprised if it doesn’t cover especially well; the point is to prepare the surface ready for painting.
• Apply a coat of Eggshell or EcoPro Eggshell and let it dry. If using Earthborn Eggshell, lightly sand the dried surface with fine sandpaper for an ultra-smooth finish.
• Apply a further 1-2 coats depending on coverage and colour. Earthborn Eggshell dries to a durable, soft sheen that doesn’t require any extra protective finishing. - Benefits

- FAQs
-
- How much paint will I need?
- You will get between 11-14sqm per litre. You can thin with up to 10% water.
- How long does it take to dry?
- The product is touch-dry after 15 minutes; light sanding can be carried out after 45 minutes and a second coat applied after 2 hours dependent on environmental conditions. Due to the rapid drying rate of proAqua Eggshell, care needs to be taken to work in a logical manner so as not to ‘over-brush’ or ‘lay off’ areas already painted. Particular care needs to be taken when painting large flat areas or panels.
- Where can I use Earthborn proAqua Eggshell Paint?
- Earthborn proAqua Eggshell paint can be used on any internal woodwork.Earthborn proAqua Eggshell paint gives a smooth, flexible yet durable finish that allows the wood to breathe and will not fade or discolour with time. It covers well, dries quickly and requires no separate primer or undercoat (for new wood just dilute the first coat with 10% water).
- Can I use it over old paint?
- For best results proAqua Eggshell should be applied to bare and untreated wood. Surfaces previously coated with proAqua Eggshell or proAqua Varnish should be lightly sanded before recoating. The surface should be smooth, dry and absorbent. It is not recommended for use on surfaces previously treated with oil-based products such as gloss and polyurethane varnish, unless the previous coating is thoroughly aged (usually over 3 years old) and has been well sanded. Loose or flaking material must be removed with a brush or scraper. Any defective wood should be repaired and any exuding resin removed with alcohol or a similar product.
