Internal Wall Insulation
Internal Wall Insulation is applied from the inside of the masonry, technically there are more limitations than with external wall insulation, care must be taken to ensure the materials and thickness are appropriate and do not create additional issues. Internal insulation is often used where installation externally is not possible due to architectural, conservation or aesthetic restrictions, however the internal works can have an impact on the use of the property as it may necessitate the removal of fittings e.g. radiators, skirting boards, architraves etc.
When insulating internally, even using vapour permeable materials, there is a risk of interstitial condensation forming between the insulation and the masonry. The greater the thickness of insulation the greater the risk of condensation, this can be managed in some instances by incorporating a variable vapour control layer which is only possible with some insulation approaches. Insulation is governed by the law of diminishing returns, which means as the insulation increases in thickness the performance does not increase proportionally, 40mm-60mm of insulation provides a large proportion of energy savings and will comply with building regulations in a lot of cases, for more information visit our knowledge hub.
We have a range of options for internal insulation which can be split into 3 categories
Solid board insulation: Amorim Cork Boards or Schneider Woodfibre Boards, typically 40-60mm thick to limit condensation risk.
Flexible insulation: A combination of flexible insulation, variable vapour control layer and rigid insulation boards or plaster carrier boards.
Insulating renders: Provide a lower level of insulation than boards or flexible insulation but have a lower impact on the appearance of the building.
All internal insulation options should be checked for condensation risk to ensure they are suitable.
