External Wall Insulation
External Wall Insulation is installed from the outside of the property, wrapping the building in an envelope which has several benefits over internal wall insulation. The fully enclosed masonry has minimal thermal bridges, the insulation acts as a rain screen protecting the building fabric from being exposed to the elements and the masonry can act as thermal mass. By protecting the building externally the masonry is on the warm side of insulation removing the risk of interstitial condensation and allowing the thickness of insulation to be determined by other factors.
This type of installation method can change the physical appearance of the building (which will usually require planning permission) and may necessitate the removal of rainwater goods and may require adaptation of the roof and wall junctions as well as window and door openings as the wall is effectively being made thicker. Often for listed properties (or properties with very uneven walls) an insulation board would not be suitable in which case the insulating renders could be an option.
If external insulation is not possible for your project please check out our internal wall insulation options.
