Wall Insulation

Heat will always flow from a warm area to a cold one, the colder it is outside, the faster heat from your home will escape. Wall insulation slows down the rate at which heat escapes, keeping your home warmer for longer. We have a different wall insulation options depending on the construction type of the building, Internal and external insulation for solid masonry walls and timber frame options for modern studwork or traditional panels. All our systems use natural fibre insulation and focus on protecting the fabric of the structure, whether that is the timber frame or the masonry wall.

Insulating masonry walls
Solid walls are simple in their construction and the way they are designed to protect  themselves. They rely on moisture being able to move through the wall as both a liquid and as a gas. The walls of these buildings are protected by an appropriate external finish that is usually determined by aesthetics and/or architectural style as well as the level of protection that a particular elevation requires to be able to resist the build-up of liquid moisture. This can be undecorated pointing, vapour permeable paints, render, slate hanging or cladding. Any moisture that does penetrate the surface must be able to evaporate.

A large majority of solid walled buildings in this country are built of brick or stone and tend to pre-date the 1930s. For brick-built buildings, solid brick walls are usually around 22cm thick, if the wall is more than 25.4cm thick then it may have a cavity so be sure to check the construction. Stone walls can vary considerably from 10cm to 100cm. Your house may have extensions from different periods and may therefore be constructed with different methods, this will need to be understood prior to making a choice about how to upgrade the insulation value of your home/building.

Preparation is key to achieving a successful retrofit project, external walls must be well maintained and dry before the insulation can be applied, a dry wall can be up to 30% more energy efficient than a wet wall.
