Roof Insulation

When insulating a roof there are two options for where you locate the insulation depending on how the loft space will be used and the thermal performance required.

Loft insulation

Loft insulation is installed above the ceiling of the room below (typically in the loft floor), keeping heat inside the living space below and creating a cold loft. It’s usually the most cost-effective option as the area to insulate is smaller and means the loft space is ventilated and unheated.

Pitched Roof insulation

Pitched roof insulation is fitted along the roof slopes between or above the rafters, keeping the entire loft space warm. This approach is often referred to as a “warm roof” and is ideal if the loft includes habitable space or may be converted in the future. The area to insulate is larger, requiring more materials but brings the loft space within the insulated envelope.
