Ty-Mawr Limewash

Limewash is the traditional paint used to finish lime work both internally and externally. Ty-Mawr's high-quality limewash is the ideal paint to use on lime plaster/render or masonry/brick pointed with lime mortar as it is the most vapour permeable paint. This is an extremely cost-effective paint and has good coverage, 3-4sqm per litre (- 20 litres will cover 60-80sqm per coat). It is now available in a beautiful range of tints and full colours to suit all tastes and budgets.

Please note: When sending our limewash via a parcel courier, the limewash is dispatched in jerry cans to ensure adequate protection during transportation.

Once you receive the goods, you will need to shake the can, to disrupt any settlement and decant into a spare bucket (not provided) for any dilution/mixing/pigmentation prior to use.

The limewash is caustic and thin (it a wash) so please ensure that you protect your skin, eyes and the surfaces around you, as you would for limewashing, as it will splash. It is also heavy so please bear this in mind.

If you would rather the goods not be sent in jerry cans, please let us know and we can quote for delivery on a pallet. We are sorry but buckets cannot be sent via parcel due to the likelihood of potential damage.

It has a matt finish and a 'depth' which most modern paints lack. It reflects light and appears to 'glow' in sunlight. The Ty-Mawr Limewash is a creamy off-white to which pigments can be added or premixed colours are available.

External Limewash
Other additions to limewash
As well as adding fine aggregate to make a shelter coat or pigments to produce a colour, it is possible to add other ingredients to limewash, some of the most popular
are:
• casein, to help it adhere to the background. Only add 500g casein powder (mixed into a paste), to a 20-litre bucket of limewash. We would recommend that this is used internally where a limewash aesthetic is required but where e.g. residues on the wall mean that a pure limewash will struggle to adhere.
• raw linseed oil can also be used, usually externally at a ratio of a 100ml per 20-litre bucket.
• tallow - again this helps the limewash to bind and weather, as it is a ‘fat’, it is best added when the quicklime is ‘slaked’ (so that it dissolves when the limewash is ‘hot’), it is possible to buy pre-made ‘tallowed limewash’ which avoids having to deal with quicklime yourself.

It should be noted, that additives can compromise the vapour permeability of the wall and so should be used with caution. Many limewash ‘paints’ on the market may have acrylics or other additives that may not be desirable technically for the building or environmentally.

Please note that the Ultra Blue Limewash is supplied as Off White with a separate measured bag of pigment. This is because the alkalinity of the limewash will damage the Ultra Blue Pigment when in solution, once set and carbonated the coloured pigment is stable and long-lasting. Therefore we can’t mix it in before dispatch, for best results, you will need to use the mixed Ultra Blue Limewash within a few days, in solution the colour gradually fades to white.

Please note, the coloured paints are made to order, we will, therefore, notify you of a lead time when the order is placed or call us if you have any concerns.

We are unable to refund paints made to order so please ensure that you have the correct colour (we advise purchasing a sample first) and that you have calculated quantities based on the printed coverage rates.

Application Advice

It is vitally important to apply limewash correctly to avoid e.g excessive dusting, you should also ensure that you order enough of your chosen colour to complete the project to avoid variations particularly on same elevation. See technical sheet for further information.

Properties - the adhesion of limewash relies on suction from the surface to which it is applied. It sticks well to lime plasters and renders, stone, brick and similar materials, but does not adhere so well to modern materials and finishes.

In some circumstances, it may be necessary to help limewash bind (eg very exposed conditions). Casein, tallow or raw linseed oil can be added for this purpose, but remember that any additive may compromise the 'breathability' of limewash to some extent.

Limewash is caustic and it is therefore important to protect your eyes and skin. For the limewash to be successful, it is vitally important to apply it correctly and in the right weather conditions to avoid e.g excessive dusting.

Benefits
  • Has been used as a decorative and protective finish for 1000s of years
  • Is extremely "breathable" (water vapour permeable) enabling any moisture that has entered the building to evaporate which results in healthier, drier buildings.
  • Contains no VOC's, this makes it safe for you and your familiy to live with (N.B. it is caustic, so skin and eyes should be protected during application but it does not off-gas or pollute the room in anyway).
  • Is mildly antiseptic so is still used in agricultural buildings prior to e.g. lambing, to help 'cleanse' the internal environment
  • Gives a beautiful matt aesthetic which no modern paint can match and is just perfect for old buildings
  • Tther components can be added to help it adhere to more backgrounds and to improve it's weatherability, please see The Lime Handbook or contact us for advice - tymawr@lime.org.uk
  • Powder pigments can be added to create a limitless range of beautiful colours!
FAQs

How much limewash do I need?

The number of coats vary but usually at least three coats are required.

We work on 3-4 square metres per 1 litre per coat.

How do I apply limewash?

Please refer to our technical sheet in documentation for full details on the application of limewash. It can not be applied in the same way as an 'ordinary' paint! It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid excessive dusting and failure.

How do I prepare the surface?

The surface must be clean and free of lichen, old paint etc. It may be necessary to apply a 'shelter coat' which will give the limewash a perfect 'key' and helps the longevity of the limewash.

Isn't limewash dangerous?

Limewash, like all lime products is caustic, but as long as you wear goggles and protect your skin, there is no problem with using it.

Do I need to limewash every year?

No, a well prepared and well applied limewash to an appropriate background will last many years (usually 5-7 years), however, we still have many customers that limewash agricultural buildings internally every year as it is mildly antiseptic.

Can I use limewash on wood?

It can be used on wood - indeed the 'look' on limewashed wood has been quite fashionable in recent years, it does however degrade more quickly than on walls (although this is gradual and we think gives a pleasing aesthetic!)

Can I use limewash over modern paint or plasterboard?

These are not ideal backgrounds for limewash although it is possible to add other ingredients such as casein or linseed oil to help it to adhere if you are keen to have the 'feel' of limewash and have a background that is going to be problematic - call/email us for advice.
