Depending on the condition of the surface it may be wise to apply a Shelter Coat. A shelter coat will provide an excellent 'key' for the subsequent coats of limewash as often when limewashing over bare stone, especially if the stone is hard and non-porous, it can be difficult to get pure limewash to stick and/or remain on the surface.


Limewash is the traditional paint used to finish lime work both internally and externally. Ty-Mawr's high-quality limewash is the ideal paint to use on lime plaster/render or masonry/brick pointed with lime mortar as it is the most vapour permeable paint. This is an extremely cost-effective paint and has good coverage - 20 litres will cover 60-80sqm per coat. 


Please note: to try to ensure that this product arrives with you safely, for orders of up to four single buckets, we will automatically dispatch the product in a jerry can (not a bucket) to avoid damage during transit. For orders of four buckets or more, we will despatch on a pallet carrier (not a parcel carrier) which keeps them more secure so they will arrive in buckets as shown. This is an extremely cost-effective paint and has good coverage - 20 litres will cover 60-80sqm per coat. It is now available in a beautiful range of tints and full colours to suit all tastes and budgets.

It has a matt finish and a 'depth' which most modern paints lack. It reflects light and appears to 'glow' in sunlight. The Ty-Mawr Limewash is a creamy off-white to which pigments can be added or premixed colours are available.

Benefits

FAQs

How much limewash do I need? 

The number of coats vary but usually at least three coats are required. 

We work on 3-4 square metres per 1 litre per coat. 

How do I apply limewash? 

Please refer to our technical sheet in documentation for full details on the application of limewash. It can not be applied in the same way as an 'ordinary' paint! It is important to follow the manufacturer's instructions to avoid excessive dusting and failure.

How do I prepare the surface? 

The surface must be clean and free of lichen, old paint etc. It may be necessary to apply a 'shelter coat' which will give the limewash a perfect 'key' and helps the longevity of the limewash. 

Isn't limewash dangerous? 

Limewash, like all lime products is caustic, but as long as you wear goggles and protect your skin, there is no problem with using it. 

Do I need to limewash every year? 

No, a well prepared and well applied limewash to an appropriate background will last many years (usually 5-7 years), however, we still have many customers that limewash agricultural buildings internally every year as it is mildly antiseptic. 

Can I use limewash on wood? 

It can be used on wood - indeed the 'look' on limewashed wood has been quite fashionable in recent years, it does however degrade more quickly than on walls (although this is gradual and we think gives a pleasing aesthetic!) 

Can I use limewash over modern paint or plasterboard? 

These are not ideal backgrounds for limewash although it is possible to add other ingredients such as casein or linseed oil to help it to adhere if you are keen to have the 'feel' of limewash and have a background that is going to be problematic - call/email us for advice.
