Insulation Technical Day - June
Retrofit with Confidence: Comprehensive Training on Insulating Solid Wall Buildings
If you’re a homeowner, builder, architect, or conservation officer interested in improving the thermal performance of your building, this course is for you. With an emphasis on retrofitting solid masonry buildings without compromising their health, we provide in-depth training on insulation methods that balance comfort, energy efficiency, and moisture management.
The course covers a broad spectrum of retrofitting techniques, including both internal and external insulation options, as well as roof insulation and floor systems such as the Sublime Floor System. You’ll learn how to choose the right materials, focusing on natural fibre insulations and breathable construction methods, which are key to ensuring that moisture can safely move through the building fabric.
We take an in-depth look at how to avoid the risks of interstitial condensation, a common challenge in solid masonry buildings, while still making meaningful improvements to thermal performance. You will understand the suitable build-ups for solid walls and receive practical guidance on maintaining the historical and aesthetic qualities of your property.
This course is perfect for a wide range of professionals: homeowners wanting to enhance their living space; builders and architects looking for effective, sustainable solutions; and conservation officers tasked with safeguarding heritage buildings. With a mix of practical demonstrations and expert-led discussions, this course provides the tools needed to approach retrofitting with confidence and expertise.

SUITABILITY: The course is aimed at builders, architects, and home owners wanting to get a more in depth knowledge of insulation products and procedures.
AGENDA:
The course will cover the following:
Key drivers and motivation for insulating older properties.
Understanding and restoring traditional performance, as a prerequisite for thermal improvements.
Looking beyond U-Values at other useful properties of insulation, including decrement delay and summer cooling, thermal mass and thermal damping.
Understanding and achieving breathability.
Practical options for insulating solid walls (internally and externally), solid and suspended floors, as well roofs.
The importance of incorporating airtightness as part of the insulation strategy.
Ty Mawr is based in a farmstead in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. It is on the site of a medieval manor house overlooking Llangors Lake, the largest natural lake in South Wales. The area is rich in wildlife and history.
There are a variety of walks from Ty Mawr; stroll along the edge of the lake through meadows and woodland or climb to the summit of one of the surrounding hills giving stunning panoramic views of the Brecon Beacons and Black Mountains.
There are also plenty of opportunities for other outdoor activities in the area including birdwatching, fishing and sailing on the lake, ponytrekking and a climbing activity centre.
Introduction start at 8:30am with tea/coffee, the courses start at 9:00am prompt.
When will it finish?
We aim to finish by 5pm (but it depends how many questions people are asking!)
Will food be provided?
Yes, we provide a good, home cooked lunch in the middle of the day and refreshments (tea / coffee / cakes) throughout the day just to keep you going. When you book you will be asked if you have any food allergies.
There is no practical element to this course, so no workwear is needed.
Do I need to bring anything else?
You may also want to email us photos of your own projects prior to the course if you want to discuss specific issues.
How many people will be on the course?
We try to keep the number of participants to 14.
What will I have learnt by the end of the day?
This course is designed to equip homeowners, architects, and builders with the knowledge and skills to retrofit insulation in historic (solid walled) buildings - without compromising their integrity. It will give you an understanding of retrofitting solid masonry buildings, using vapour permeable insulation techniques that maintain building health and comfort. Giving you the confidence to begin your own project or instruct your builder / architect on the materials you would like to use.
Will I get a certificate?
The course is not assessed but we can provide an attendance certificate upon request.
Is the course linked to the new Heritage Skills CSCS card?
Not directly but a lot of the material is relevant and provides good, underpinning knowledge and understanding for elements of the NVQ in Heritage Skills.
Why are the courses more expensive than some other providers?
We know that our courses are a bit more expensive than some other providers but we make no apology for this as we feel the quality is second to none. We use of some of the most experienced tutors drawn from across England and Wales, the location and a high standard of catering.
