My through coloured render/plaster appears ‘patchy’, what are the possible reasons for this?

The patchy appearance on the render/plaster will likely to be due to one or more of the following factors:-

1. Different absorbency rates of the background

2. Moisture within the wall coming out

3. Variations in thicknesses of application

4. Differences in floating/ finishing times

To a certain degree, pigmented lime plasters will always have a tonal range with lighter and darker areas – this is due to the way the pigment is held by the lime binder – it will give you a subtle movement of colour across the wall and is part of its appeal. Pronounced differences will likely be due to one of the 4  factors above.
