APPLICATIONS
Thermafleece CosyWool is harmless and can be installed without gloves or protective clothing, although we recommend you wear a dust mask in enclosed spaces such as lofts. Thermafleece CosyWool is not irritating to the skin, eyes or respiratory tract.
To retain the benefits of water vapour, absorption and release, Thermafleece CosyWool may be used in conjunction with a vapour permeable underlay. Protect the insulation from prolonged exposure to sunlight when unpacked and avoid wetting for extended periods, store under cover and clear of the ground.
Thermafleece CosyWool can be cut using a straight edge and a Stanley knife, or simply torn apart. For more accurate cutting, tightly compress or clamp the insulation between two pieces of solid 15mm board. Overhang the fleece where you want to cut keeping the two board edges aligned. Saw cut the edge using a sharp, scalloped edged knife and keep the blade firm and square against both board edges throughout. Trim any fine remaining fibres with large scissors or shears.
· Roofs – Lofts & Warm Roof
· Walls – Timber Frame & Solid Wall
· Floors – Suspended Ground Floor & Between Floor.
- Benefits
-
Because of its ability to rapidly absorb and release water vapour, THERMAFLEECE wool insulation can help to keep buildings cool in summer and warm in winter.
NATURALLY BREATHABLE - being hygroscopic, it can absorb and desorb water vapour without compromising its thermal efficiency. It is therefore ideal for use in roofs and timber framed walls designed to avoid a damaging build-up of moisture by allowing water vapour to migrate through the structure.
CONDENSATION CONTROL - Wool generates heat when it absorbs moisture from the air. That energy is known as the heat of sorption and accounts for the warmth felt by wearers of woollen clothes in winter conditions. When the air is saturated with water vapour, wool absorbs some 40% of its dry weight in moisture, producing 960 kilojoules of heat energy for every kilogram of dry wool. This warmth is not noticeable inside the building but it acts to prevent condensation in construction cavities by maintaining the temperature above the dew-point in damp conditions.
ENERGY EFFICIENT - it uses only 14% of the embodied energy that is used to manufacture glass fibre insulation, therefore paying back its manufacturing energy cost seven times faster than glass fibre.
HARMLESS - it can be installed without gloves or protective clothing. It is not irritating to the skin, eyes or respiratory tract and causes no discomfort to site workers during installation. Any fibres which happen to reach the living space will present no hazard to health. The necessary insect proofing and fire resistance rating is achieved by the inclusion of naturally derived additives.
EXTREMELY DURABLE - the fibre adapts to the shape of rafters, joists and studs to provide a permanently tight fit. Properly installed, it will retain its low density and thermal performance - with a life expectancy similar to that of the construction in which it is installed.
At the end of its useful life, it can be RECYCLED for other environmentally friendly applications.
It contains no permethrin, pyrethroids, pesticides or formaldehydes and so is completely safe to use and live with.
The low thermal conductivity of THERMAFLEECE (0.039W/m.K) compares favourably with that of other fibrous insulants.
The product contains a necessary lofting agent and so it maintains fibre stability.
It has a higher fire resistance than cellulose and cellular plastic insulants; it does not burn but rather melts away from an ignition source and extinguishes itself. THERMAFLEECE is treated with a natural fire-proofing agent to improve its intrinsic fire resistance and comply with BS 5803-4 (Spread of Fire) achieving results of zero for ignitability, spread of flame and heat evolved.
It is protected against attack by moths and beetles using a borax treatment. Borax is a natural mineral salt that is used in a wide variety of applications. The use of borax to treat wool is extremely safe and poses no risk to people or the environment. Our wool is treated with borax at the wool cleaning stage to ensure a consistent treatment that penetrates deep into the wool fibre.
It has good acoustic properties - see Documentation, which means that it can now be specified as part of your noise control scheme.
The above are points are made with reliance of Eden Renewable’s own published material – available in the documentation section.
Plastic is necessary for packing quilted natural insulation. At present there is no alternative material available that provides adequate protection for our products during transit and storage. We are constantly reviewing this position. In our case, not only does plastic packaging protect the product, it also enables our supplier to compress the insulation greatly reducing packaging waste and carbon miles from factory gate to our warehouse, to you the customer. Our Thermafleece suppliers use recycle code 4 LDPE for all of their packaging. Most of the insulation is compress packed in order to minimise packaging. Compress packing also enables them to reduce the thickness of packaging. The packaging weight per sqm of 100mm Thermafleece CosyWool is 22g per sqm their packaging waste is around a quarter of that from alternative brands of natural insulation.

Are all wool insulation products the same?
No, you should be aware that the quality and variety of wool insulation on the market varies hugely so don’t assume that the claims of one brand apply to the rest. The answers here relate specifically to the Thermafleece® brand.
Is your wool insulation made just from wool?
No, it is blended with a binder – Tŷ-Mawr Thermafleece® Original contains 75% wool blended with 15% recycled polyester, and 10% polyester binder with a highly recycled content. The binder content is extremely important because the binder holds the insulation together and ensures it maintains its loft for the life of the insulation. If the binder content is too low, the insulation is less likely to maintain its desired thickness and is prone to slumping once installed.
Where is your wool sourced?
Our wool is 100% British purchased through the British Wool Marketing Board. At least 75% of our wool originates from the Welsh collection stations in Brecon, Porthmadog and Newtown. By taking the time to carefully source our wool, we can be sure we are helping to generate a market specifically for a local product. Sourcing wool locally minimises road miles too, creating a lower carbon footprint than some of the ‘cheaper’ sheep’s wool products that use wools from as far afield as New Zealand.
Why is wool insulation so much more than the price the farmer gets?Raw wool is only a small part of the cost of the insulation - wool collection, processing, treatment, manufacture and transport all add to the cost.
Can I just use the wool from my farm as insulation? No, raw wool is considered an animal waste and must be cleaned by an approved scouring company to remove grease and treated to provide protection against insect attack and fire resistance before it can be used for insulation. It is also important to form the wool into a uniform matrix to ensure there are no air gaps to allow heat to pass through.
How does Thermafleece® react to fire?Wool is naturally resistant to fire and it is treated with a borate fire retardant and complies with BS5803-4 for spread of flame and resistance to smouldering.
Is it moth-proof?
Yes, wool containing borax is resistant to moth attack for the life of the insulation. Unlike organic insecticides, borax does not degrade or evaporate when exposed to elevated temperatures. Borax treated wool is safe for birds, bats and bees as well as us humans. Organic insecticides such as permethrin or chlorofenapyr can be extremely harmful to wildlife and the environment.
