Sustainable design and construction to achieve Low Energy, PassivHaus and Zero Carbon homes are now at the forefront of the building and planning process. Codes and standards are in place which aim to reduce carbon emissions and create homes that are healthier and more sustainable. The only way to achieve PassivHaus, Low Carbon and Zero Carbon building is to ensure a high level of airtightness is attained.

That means designing and installing a continuous seal around the internal fabric of the external envelope to eliminate unwanted draughts. Once the airtight vapour check is in place and sealed with pro clima’s flexible and durable tapes, seals and glues, it ensures that the insulation functions to its optimum performance, saving energy and drastically reducing carbon emissions for the lifetime of the building.

The pro clima range of airtight building systems offer an ‘Intelligent’ option. This differs greatly from conventional vapour barriers and vapour checks as the membranes may become more vapour ‘diffusion open’ when required. This means that they have the ability to alter their diffusion resistance depending on the average relative humidity surrounding the vapour check, thus ensuring that interstitial condensation risk is minimised, ensuring no structural damage from moisture, mould, rot and damp.

pro clima INTELLO® PLUS features humidity-variable diffusion resistance. It gives maximum protection to thermal insulation where moisture entry may have occurred. This may be through leaks, damp building materials or diffusion through adjoining structural surfaces. Intello plus possesses the world’s best and most effective variable diffusion resistance.

This ensures optimum protection for all fibrous insulating materials in all constructions, whether they are vapour diffusion permeable or vapour diffusion resistant externally such as pitched roofs with bitumen sheeting or metal sheet roofing, flat roofs and walls with a diffusion resistant exterior cladding.

  • Provides optimum protection for all thermal insulation systems in roofs, walls and floors.
  • Offers high diffusion tightness in winter and maximum diffusion openness in summer.
  • In winter, its high diffusion resistance provides ideal protection for the building’s structure against condensation.
  • In summer, its low diffusion resistance facilitates rapid drying.
  • It is translucent, easy to install, fully recyclable.
  • It offers the ideal solution to structures that are difficult to protect against condensation e.g. flat roofs, flexible metal sheeting, etc.
  • INTELLO PLUS provides lasting protection from mould growth, which protects the health of the occupants and structural durability.
  • Meets with the durability requirements of EN 13984.
  • Has a very high nail tear resistance due to reinforcing layer.

In July 2015 it was confirmed that pro clima Intelligent Airtightness system, including the pro clima INTELLO PLUS intelligent airtightness and vapour control membrane, had met all the requirements set out by both the BBA (British Board of Agrément) and the NHBC (See Benefits section below).

BBA is the UK’s major authority, offering approval and inspection services to manufacturers, installers, construction products and systems. BBA certification is only awarded after systems or products have successfully passed a broad assessment involving laboratory testing, on-site evaluations and production inspections.

Application Advice

Can be used as a vapour check and airtightness membranes for all externally diffusion-open structures, e.g. with roof underlay (pro clima SOLITEX), softwood fibreboard or MDF board.

For a high level of protection against moisture induced failures in structurally challanging constructions such as diffusion-resistant flat/pitched roofs.

Also suitable in extreme environments such as in high mountain regions.

Pro clima INTELLO PLUS should be laid with the side with the plastic film (the printed side) facing the installer.

They can be laid flat either at right angles to or along the sub-structure (such as the rafters) without sagging. If laid horizontally (at right angles to the sub-structure) then the maximum space permitted between the rafters is 100 cm.

After laying, it is necessary to support the weight of the insulation with lathing on the inside. The laths should be no more than 50 cm apart. If, when using insulation mats and boards, for example, you expect systematic tension as a result of the insulation weight on the adhesive tape joins, an additional supporting lath should be placed on the overlap.

Alternatively, the adhesive tape can be reinforced along the overlap by sticking strips of adhesive tape at right angles to the overlap every 30 cm.

Airtight seals can only be achieved on vapour control membranes that have been laid without folds or creases. Ventilate regularly to prevent excessive humidity (e.g. during the construction phase). Occasional rush/inrush ventilation is not adequate to quickly evacuate large amounts of construction-related humidity from the building. Use a dryer if necessary.

To prevent condensation, INTELLO PLUS should be stuck down so that it is airtight immediately after installing the thermal insulation. This particularly applies when working in winter.

Additionally for injected foam insulation - INTELLO PLUS can also be used as a membrane for all types of injected foam insulation. Your reinforcing layer prevents stretching during injection of the insulation foam. If laid along the sub-structure it has the advantage that the overlap is supported on a firm foundation and is therefore protected.

To prevent condensation, the injected foam insulation should be introduced immediately after installing the airproofing layer. This particularly applies when working in winter.

Benefits

In July 2015 it was confirmed that pro clima Intelligent Airtightness system, including the pro clima INTELLO PLUS intelligent airtightness and vapour control membrane, had met all the requirements set out by both the BBA (British Board of Agrément) and the NHBC.

BBA is the UK’s major authority, offering approval and inspection services to manufacturers, installers, construction products and systems. BBA certification is only awarded after systems or products have successfully passed a broad assessment involving laboratory testing, on-site evaluations and production inspections.

Niall Crosson, Senior Engineer with Ecological Building Systems commented: “Receiving BBA certification for the pro clima Intelligent Airtightness system reinforces the unsurpassed standards set by pro clima in the manufacture and delivery of durable airtightness solutions which are fit for purpose and last the lifetime of the building. pro clima have already received independent tests to confirm an expected lifespan for their tapes of at least 100 years.
pro clima are pioneers not only in delivering Intelligent airtight solutions, but combining this with optimum protection against condensation and mould growth by utilising Intelligent membrane technology. Receiving BBA certification provides specifiers, engineers and homeowners with even more reassurance that the pro clima Intelligent Airtightness system will assist in delivering a robust airtight result.”

During the assessment process pro clima INTELLO PLUS was evaluated in a range of constructions where INTELLO’s unique INTELLIGENT vapour control properties provide unsurpassed safety against condensation.
This included unventilated flat roofs.

The advanced hygrothermal simulation programme, WUFI, was used to carry out assessments in accordance with BS 15026, based on British climate data. BS 15026 defines the practical application of hygrothermal simulation software used to predict one- dimensional transient heat and moisture transfer in multi-layer building envelope components subjected to non steady climate conditions on either side.

In contrast to the steady-state assessment of interstitial condensation by the Glaser method (as described in EN ISO 13788), transient hygrothermal simulation provides more detailed and accurate information on the risk of moisture problems within building components and on the design of remedial treatment. While the Glaser method considers only steady-state conduction of heat and vapour diffusion, the transient models covered in this standard take account of heat and moisture storage, latent heat effects, and liquid and convective transport under realistic boundary and initial conditions.

The application of such models has become widely used in building practice in recent years, resulting in a significant improvement in the accuracy and reproducibility of hygrothermal simulation (BSI 2007).
