Ty-Mawr Limewash

A traditional paint made using fat lime. It 'sets' when exposed to carbon dioxide in the air. It is the ideal paint to use on lime plaster, masonry, brick, etc... as it is the most breathable paint. It has a matt finish and a 'depth' which most modern paints lack. It reflects light and appears to 'glow' in sunlight.

Ty-Mawr Limewash is a creamy off-white to which pigments can be added. A pigmented limewash tends to have a slight colour variation across the surface;this slight blotchy effect is quite normal and is generally considered to be part of it's beauty.

The adhesion of the limewash relies on suction from the surface to which it is applied. It sticks well to lime plasters and renders, stone, brick and similar materials, but does not adhere so well to modern materials and finishes.

In some circumstances, it may be necessary to help limewash bind (eg, very exposed conditions). Casein, tallow or raw linseed oil can be added for this purpose, but remember that any additive may compromise the breathability of limewash to some extent. Please call us for more advice.

Finest White Peak Limewash

This limewash is very finely sieved giving maximum coverage and a brilliant rich finish. It holds pigment exceptionally well, giving greatere quality to colours. Carbonation is rapid, giving shirter maturing time and better permeability than 'conventional' limewashes. It is available in white or 24 ready mixed colours. A new range of deeper colours will soon be available - please contact us for details.

Pigments

These powder pigments can be added to our Ty-Mawr Limewash and casein paints. These colours are approximate  - it is advisable to purchase samples if you require an accurate representation. By combing pigments or varying the quantity of pigment used, the colour range is infinate.

The pigment colours on our chart are achieved using 25ml of pigment per litre per 1 litre of emulsion. The quantity of pigment required depends on the intensity of the colour required. Limewash requires more pigment than any other paint - a rough guide is 1 litre of pigment per 20 litre bucket of limewash. Bulk quantities are available, please call fo a 25kg price.

Paint Matching and Mixing

We offer a paint matching service (within the limits of our pigments) and are able to tailor mix paints to acheive  the colour that you are looking for. Please call to discuss your requirements or to arrange an appointment.
