TY-MAWR LAUNCHES NEW WELSH WOOL INSULATION FOR CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY

Product code :

Welsh wool will be used to insulate and warm homes and buildings throughout the UK under a new deal announced this week that is designed to promote green products and support the rural economy.

Ty-Mawr - the Brecon based company renowned for developing a range of traditional environmentally friendly building products – is behind the initiative to produce a natural wool insulation that contains at least 75% of Welsh wool.

The Ty-Mawr Thermafleece® will be launched next month and coincides with a major expansion of the business which is being supported by the Welsh Assembly Government.

The news announced at the start of National Construction Week has been welcomed by Ieuan Wyn Jones, Minister for the Economy and Transport, who described it as an important boost for the rural economy, providing a potentially new market for Welsh sheep farmers.

“Ty-Mawr has been campaigning for some time to ensure that wool from Wales was used in their products and I congratulate the company on the successful outcome and the opportunities this can provide for the farming community.

“Ty- Mawr is a highly innovative company and has played a key role in raising awareness of the need to promote a sustainable construction industry and I am particularly pleased the Assembly Government is supporting their expansion plans.”

Joyce Morgan-Gervis, who runs Ty-Mawr with her husband Nigel Gervis, explained they had previously been unable to obtain wool specifically from Wales because nobody previously bought big enough quantities to make it economically viable to separate the welsh wool during processing.

“But as the largest distributors of wool insulation in the UK, we were able to convince our suppliers that there was a strong market demand for Welsh wool. With the support of the Wool Marketing Board we now have a guarantee that 75% of the wool bought for our new Ty-Mawr Thermafleece range comes from Wales.

“We currently sell up to 10 tons of sheep’s wool insulation a month and will be able to provide a market for even low grade fleeces as coarse wool is highly suitable for insulation.”Our supplier will still be purchasing wool under the usual UK operating system.

“ It is a natural, safe and healthy alternative to mineral insulation and represents a huge saving in embodied energy. It has thermal and acoustic properties and can be used for roof, wall and floor insulation.”

She added that if just 10% of the 155,000 new homes predicted to be built per annum used sheep’s wool insulation it would use up all the wool from the 4.7m breeding ewes in Wales.

Ty-Mawr Wales’ only manufacturer of traditional lime mortars and plaster - began as a cottage industry on the couple’s farm at Llangasty but is now expanding with the help of an Assembly Investment Grant.

The company, which has also benefited from business and marketing assistance from the Assembly Government, employs fifteen people and plans to treble turnover in the next three years.

It is buying a unit on Brecon Enterprise Park from the Assembly Government which will help mainstream the business and increase productivity significantly. It will also mark the launch of a major distribution network for Ty-Mawr products throughout the UK.
