Coverage : Quantity required varies with application - as a guide 200Kg of hydraulic lime is required to 1 cubic metre of mortar mixed at 3:1. Hydraulic Lime is produced from limestone containing clay and other impurities which enables it to set without exposure to air (unlike fat lime products), it therefore means that lime can be used  in harsher conditions, eg, they are ideal for use in foundations, limecrete floors, sea-defence walls, chimneys, parapets, copings, paving, etc..

Benefits:

• supplied as a powder to which water and sand must be added in the correct ratios - see aggregates to use with lime.
• variable strengths for most everyday applications:

>feebly hydraulic lime (NHL2) - less than 12% clay content making it slower to set (about 20 days in water). For use in internal plasters or mortar for brick/'soft' stone;
>moderately hydraulic lime (NHL3.5) - 12%-18% clay content resulting in a slightly faster set (15-20 days in water). For external renders and mortars;
>eminently hydraulic lime (NHL5) - up to 25% clay content providing a fast set (hours / days). For external flauching and mortars in extreme conditions/situations where high strength but low breathibility is required.                                                                                                          >NHLZ which has an added 'pozzolan' enabling, eg, an NHL3.5 to perform like and NHL5.

• gain strength overtime hence providing flexibility and avoiding the need for expansion joints.
• considered to be more environmentally friendly than cement as they are burnt at a lower temperature and uniquely reabsorb some of the carbon dioxide given off during burning as they cure/carbonatein/on the wall. They also enable building components to be reclaimed and reused as they are 'softer' than cement.
• set under water hence ideal for applications with the sea, canals, rivers, etc...

Tips - Cement is responsible for 1500 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per annum - that 10 % of worldwide carbon dioxide emissions. Hydraulic limes have an energy saving of up to 40% compared to cement and can easily achieve strengths suitable for most domestic and commercial applications. Its time for lime! It is important to use lime of the right strength for the right situation, advice should be sought if you are unsure as the increase in speed and strength of set provided by hydraulic lime reduces the flexibility and breathibility of the mortar/plaster/render.
