Hydraulic Lime - British Singleton Birch

SB nhl3.5

We stock the full range of Singleton Birch hydraulic lime products. Their hydraulic lime is a dry powder which is made by slaking quicklime from local silaceous chalks and is normally supplied in 25kg sacks. The range is:

Natural hydraulic lime NHL 2 is typically used for internal works, external repointing / rendering and building on soft masonry in sheltered areas. Conforms to EN459 as an NHL 2 product or feebly hydraulic.

Natural hydraulic lime NHL 3.5 is typically used for most repointing / rendering and building works on most masonry types. Conforms to EN459 as an NHL 3.5 product or moderately hydraulic.

Natural hydraulic lime NHL Z (NHL3.5 with a pozzolan added to give the equivalent of an NHL5) is typically used in our floors and for external works in exposed areas such as chimneys, copings or river and canal works and provides a faster, harder set. Conforms to EN459 as an NHL 5 product or eminently hydraulic.

Please call for advice on which lime to choose or see Choosing A Lime in the documentation section.

These limes have become increasingly popular over the last decade because of their comparative ‘ease of use’ and ‘strength’ compared to fat limes, but they should be used for the right situation as limes that are too strong can cause damage to the fabric of the building in the same way that cement does. The golden rule is that the mortar or plaster should always be weaker than the building components it is used on! Call for advice or see applications below.

Singleton Birch is the only British Hydraulic Lime and is available in 25kg bags.

Please note that this product must be stored completely dry and frost-free and used within 6 months of manufacture.

tickthey broaden the application for building limes by enabling mortars and plasters to be used in harsher environments and in more extreme situations but please note the Singleton Birch limes are 'softer' compared to the imported limes - call for advice.

tickthey gain strength overtime hence providing flexibility and avoiding the need for expansion joints.

tickconsidered to be more environmentally friendly than cement as they are burnt at a lower temperature and uniquely reabsorb some of the carbon dioxide given off during burning as they cure/carbonate in/on the wall.

tickenable building components to be reclaimed and reused as they are 'softer' than cement.

tickoffer a more sustainable choice as they are the only hydraulic limes produced in Britain!
