Traditional Fat Lime Mortar
Old and historic buildings will require re-pointing as the mortar gradually deteriorates.
Choosing a lime mortar will ensure the building continues to function as it was designed.
Note: a lime mortar is not a cement mortar which a shovel of hydrated lime!
Pre-Mixed Lime Mortar is usually made by blending fat lime putty with specially selected aggregates; it is suitable for both building and pointing. The mortar is supplied ready-to-use but will require 'knocking-up' prior to use - ideally using a mortar mill. A range of standard mortars is available, but should you wish to match an existing mortar, we could advise on an appropriate mix by analysing a sample of the original mortar.#
Benefits:
You should be aware that aggregates occasionally run out, eg, if a quarry closes. If it is important that you maintain the colour for the whole job, then you should ensure that you purchase sufficient supplies where possible.
Selecting a Mortar
It is important when re-pointing an old building to select an appropriate mortar. Consideration should be given to both the colour and the texture of the original mortar (unless it is to be subsequently limewashed). We have a selection of standard mortars which may assist your choice (please refer to the Box of nine mortar samples on sale) or you can send us a sample of your mortar for analysis (£29.37 inc. VAT).
Tips - We do not add any cement to our products. To speed up the set pozzolans can be added. Ideal for older properties - suitable for poitning and building - especially suitable for internal work and external brick and soft stone work.
