On June 5th, Ty-Mawr was awarded LABC System Type Approval for their insulated limecrete floor at the start of the Greener Homes and Building event in Builth Wells. This means that it is now easier for their clients to receive Local Authority Building Control approval wherever they are in the country as it covers all 376 local authority areas in the UK.
The floor has been widely specified and used in traditional buildings as it is highly compatible with the construction method being flexible (there is no need for expansion joints) as well as vapour permeable as the case studies section will show – churches and cathedrals have welcomed it with open arms but it is just as relevant to our cottages and barns, this approval will make it easier for those caring for old buildings to choose and use it.
But, in this day and age, where our attention turns to the environment, the floor is attractive because the components have lower embodied energy than those used in a concrete floor and it is recyclable at the end of its useful life as well! The construction industry is responsible for contributing some 70 million tonnes of waste to landfill annually in this country, it is therefore important to consider what will eventually happen to the building materials we choose to use today.
LABC's mission is to ensure that buildings are healthy, safe, sustainable and accessible for all users and tenants whether domestic, commercial or public service. The insulated limecrete floor helps to tick all of these boxes and assists the LABC in their aim to to help developers, designers and builders to make the best choices when planning projects. This change of emphasis achieves high quality building without annoying and expensive corrections happening late in the construction phase.
Developed by Welsh-based manufacturer Ty-Mawr Lime Ltd, this accreditation is the latest in a long line of milestones in bringing ecological, practical building solutions to the market.
The certification is conditional on each floor being specifically designed to meet the requirements of the individual building, this is where Ty-Mawr’s free service for their specifiers and clients has won them widespread acknowledgement, this service will continue to be free to all those intending to specifiy materials from Ty-Mawr or to purchase the materials from Ty-Mawr. Please email tymawr@lime.org.uk for the fcalculation form or download one from the Doumentation section of this website.
Joyce Gervis, Director of Ty-Mawr said “we have worked closely with Powys and Carmarthenshire County Councils to satisfy the accreditation process. We will continually work to improve the environmental and technical credentials of the floor as we have done over the last ten years but reaching this point will make specifying and using the floor much easier for both our clients and ourselves”.
