Traditional and Sustainable Building at the Royal Welsh Show!
This year, Brecon based Ty-Mawr Ltd. who specialise in the manufacture and supply of ‘traditional and ecological building products’, are hoping to inspire visitors to the Royal Welsh Show with a large exhibition of traditional and sustainable building skills. They will be joined by a wide range of craftsmen and women who will be demonstrating thatching, plastering, traditional wattle and daub-ing, stone carving, conservation painting, gilding, engraving and even pizza oven making!
Nigel Gervis, Techncial Director said “ one of the rewards of being in our business, is meeting and working with very skilled individuals, people who use their hands to conserve our buildings and to create a better environment. We are pleased that so many of these skilled individuals are giving of their time, especially at this very busy time of the year for the industry, to join with us in our aim to raise the profile of our heritage as well as a more sustainable way of living and building!”.
Ty-Mawr’s popular demonstration house will again be central to the display, it was part of the Welsh exhibition at the Smithonian Folk Life festival in Washington D.C. in 2009 and travels the country from event to event showing practical installations of lime plasters made with hemp and recycled glass, limecrete floors, woodfibre and wood wool boards, sheep’s wool insulation, recycled newspaper insulation batts, natural paints and much more.
In addition, we are being joined by the only British manufacturer of Hydraulic Lime, Singleton Birch as well as the manufacturer of our Welsh Wool Insulation, Second Nature who are also sponsoring the demonstration marquee. The Traditional and Ecological Building Skills and Materials marquee can be found opposite the Sports village at in the Countryside Care Area - stand CCA755 (entrance ‘B’) or visit our website to find out more!
Exhibitions, Events, Talks and Demonstrations 2010
Ty-Mawr has had another eventful year of events helping to spread the word and share the skills!
2010 started with the Surface Design Show in London in February, after that exhibitions came and went at an alarming rate inlcuding the Morgan Stanley Global Sustainability Week in Canary Wharf, London, the Small Holders Show, Builth Wells, the Greener Homes Show, the Royal Welsh, LLandeilo Show, the Green Man Festival and the National Botanical Gardens of Wales for the START festival..
We have delivered talks all over the country at all sorts of events including the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings "Insulating and Breathable Plasters" day, an insulated limecrete floor day for Somerset Council and the Churches Conservation Trust, Lancing College, a lime day for Shepton Mallet Townscape Heritage Initiative and the Overlooking the Wye project, a lime pointing day for British Waterways, a tour of the Ty-Mawr site and Lime CPDs for RICS, Wales, the Landmark Trust, GLASU Caring for Churches day and RIBA accredited CPDs for several architects practices from Edinburgh to London to Aberystwyth.
Our courses have been well attended again this year, with additonal dates regularly being added to cope with demand. After plastering on the National Mall in Washington last year, we were pleased to have the opportunity again this year to 'spread the word' elsewhere in the world - in Jordan - see our blog for more information!

The house can next be seen at Llangadog Community Centre as part of the National Maintenance Week - on Wednesday 24th November 2010.
2009
The Ty-Mawr demonstration house 'went' global in 2009 by attending the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, Washington, as well as events closer to home including the Green Man Festival, Mid Wales, the Royal Welsh Show, Open Days for the National Trust/Tywi Afon Yr Oesedd Project etc. It helps to raise awareness of traditional and sustainable building materials and methods.
The Demonstration House
The house shows our range of environmentally friendly ideas for wall, floor and roof build ups using wool insulation, woodfibre/wood wool boards, various lime plasters including lime hemp and glaster (made with recycled glass), limecrete and our new ranges of natural paints.
We are also able to demonstrate lime plastering, pargetting and thatching etc depending on the event.
BUT, you don't have to wait to see us at an event, it is possible to visit Ty-Mawr to discuss how our products might be incorporated into your project, please email us to make an appointment - tymawr@lime.org.uk.
"we made a visit here to the "Big House" and found it had a big soul and welcome too with its golden-apricot walls that gleamed proudly in the evening sun.. we found such inspiration in our search for sensitive materials for number 5. Soft soft lime walls everywhere, vibrant and glowing, a true testament to their owners Nigel and Joyce. Touch, smell and listen to the walls, they are sensual, alive and exude the passion, respect and great energy that has been invested in them. It's what every building deserves and every owner too". samuel + harris architects
