"Re :Ty-Mawr paints - I would recommend them... they have better coverage and are better quality than anything you can buy on the high street".

glaster plasters and mortars

Alarmed by the environmental effects of large scale sand extraction, Tyˆ -Mawr Lime Ltd decided to improve the environmental credentials of their traditional lime mortars, plasters and renders by identifying alternative aggregates. The result is a unique product range known as glaster® - a blend of lime (binder) and recycled glass (aggregate), to make plasters, renders and mortars which are suitable for old buildings, ecological new builds or for those wanting to add a surface finish with a difference.

                   COLOURED PLASTER

Why use glaster?

■ helps to control condensation and damp, thus creating a healthier building by controlling relative humidity

■ enables other sustainable building materials to be used such as wood, straw, woodfibre boards, clay and
earth

■ can be recycled at the end of its useful life and will allow other building components to be reclaimed
■ is technically excellent with some performance advantages over sand based equivalents

■ is versatile – it can be hand or spray applied to stone, brick, laths or wood wool boards

■ produces a unique aesthetic by combining different colours of glass with pigments

■ reduces the demand for sand (currently 2 million tonnes per annum are extracted depleting a natural resource).
For every tonne of recycled glass used, 1.2 tonnes of raw materials are preserved.

■ reduces the amount of glass going to landfill. Although glass is not directly hazardous to the environment, it will
remain there indefinitely, so it helps to develop a market for the 8% of household waste.

“30 gallons of oil are saved for every tonne of glass which is recycled.” FRIENDS OF THE EARTH

                       glaster

Internal glaster finish plaster - left unfinished, it can be 'sponged' back to reveal more of the glass and twinkles given the right light!

                       roughcast glaster plaster on panel

External roughcast - the increased surface area is an extremely effective way of shedding water so was traditionally widely used on coasts and expose buildings like castles. The glaster roughcast is of course made with a recycled aggregate so is 'greener' too!
