Nigel and Joyce Gervis are extremely proud to have been named as one of the 52 sustainable development champions in Wales’ first annual Green List.

The Wales Green List celebrates individuals making Wales a better and more sustainable place to live. It’s the first list of its kind in Wales, bringing together the different elements of sustainable development – environmental, economic and social – in one award.

The list, which was compiled by Cynnal Cymru – Sustain Wales, shows that green heroes are no longer restricted to stereotypical environmentalists but can just as easily be ordinary people, from any background, making a difference in their own way.

Included on the Wales Green List 2009 are chief executives in private companies, SME managing directors, politicians, parents, campaigners, poets, musicians and many more. Well-known names on list include Jane Davidson, Minister for Environment, Sustainability and Housing and Gillian Clarke, National Poet of Wales.

Speaking at a celebration at the Senedd last night (19 October 2009), Helen Nelson, Director of Cynnal Cymru - Sustain Wales said:

“The first ever Wales Green List highlights the fantastic efforts of some of our unsung heroes who are helping to create a brighter future for Wales.

“Every single person on the list has an inspirational story to tell and I’m sure their efforts will inspire others to take action too.”

A panel, representing business, media, voluntary sector and sustainable development (Mike Batt, Carbon Trust; Chris Kelsey, Media Wales; Peter Davies, Sustainable Development Commission; Clare Sain-Ley-Berry, Environment Wales; Richard Jarvis, and Helen Nelson, Cynnal Cymru - Sustain Wales) chose the best examples of sustainable development from numerous nominations received by members of the public.

A photo portrait exhibition featuring 21 green heroes from the Wales Green List was launched 19 October 2009 and will soon tour venues across Wales.

- Champion of Champions Award!

                                   ccw 1

On Monday 24th July, the Rural Affairs Minister announced the Agri-environment Award 2009 “Champion of Champions” Winners at Royal Welsh Show.

To mark the tenth anniversary of the scheme, the awards were presented by Rural Affairs Minister Elin Jones AM, to the very best agri-environment practitioners from the competition’s winners over the last decade.

Run jointly by the Countryside Council for Wales and the Royal Welsh Agricultural Society, with support from Wales Young Farmers Clubs, the awards recognise the outstanding contribution made by farmers, young farmers and contractors to caring for wildlife habitats and landscape features.

Nigel and Joyce Gervis, Ty Mawr Lime Ltd, Ty Mawr Farm, Llangasty, Brecon won the contractor/supplier award. According to the judges: “They have been at the forefront of the re-discovery of traditional building crafts. An inspirational couple, environmental care is at the core of their business. They combine innovative technologies to create new materials with a passion to inform and educate others.”

The couple were presented with a carved wooden bowl as well as a cheque for £2,000, Joyce said "it is nice to have this award in what is undoubtedly are very hard year for all small businesses. It is good that there is also a recognition of just how important our materials are to conserving and enhancing the Welsh vernacular buildings that are very much part of our landscape. In reintroducing the materials, training in the skills associated with traditional lime plastering and building with lime has been vitally important and we have seen numbers grow to around 700 people per annum attending our courses from all over the UK and even overseas!".

The Go-Green Environmental Award, sponsored by Carbon Trust, went to Powys-based Ty-Mawr Lime and was presented to the directors - Nigel and Joyce Gervis by the Trust's Mike Batt.

Ty-Mawr have worked hard to reduce the environmental footprint of their business, over the last two years they have invested over £100,000 in installing a bio-mass heating system (to heat the farm complex, offices and training centre) and installed a bespoke system to capture the 'waste heat' from their manufacturing process. A system is being installed to actually measure the savings in CO2 emmissions believed to be in the region of at least 40 tonnes per annum! This further reduces the environmental impact of the products they produce, Joyce said "our clients come to us because they are concerned about the environmental impact of buildings and building materials, the work we have done represents a huge investment for us but we feel we have an obligation to do all that we can to help the environment and hopefully our products will be even more attractive to those who share our concern to do all that they can to improve the environment!".
