Strawberry Hill House

Strawberry Hill House, the 18th-century Gothic villa created by politician and novelist Horace Walpole, is currently undergoing an £8m restoration by E.Bowman and Sons, Stamford. Horace, the son of Sir Robert Walpole, acquired the 'castle' near Twickenham, west London, in 1747,and refurbished and transformed it over four decades. Strawberry Hill was listed on the World Monuments Fund's' 100 Most Endangered Sites. It has been on English Heritage’s Buildings at Risk Register since 1991 and featured in Restoration on BBC2 in 2004 as a building in need of urgent repair.

The extensive restoration work at Strawberry Hill is currently over half way through and is on schedule to re-open in Summer 2010. This will follow an exhibition at the V&A next spring devoted to Horace Walpole and the interiors of Strawberry Hill. On completion Strawberry Hill will be opened to the public and become an important heritage attraction and education facility.

Strawberry Hill is one of the best documented houses in the country and the restoration work by Bowman has been informed following extensive research by the leading architect firm Inskip and Jenkins.

The work includes the installation of our insulated limecrete floor as well as extensive roof repairs into which our Ty-mawr Thermafleece Welsh wool insulation is being installed.
